Pair of Atlantes

Dimensions
Width 25'' ⅝  65cm
Height 118'' ⅛  300cm

Origin:
Mid-19th century.

Status:
Excellent condition, minor restorations have been made.

Pair of Atlantes or Telamons Representing Bacchus and a satyr, in carved oak.
The two characters are wearing lion skins and grapes in their hair, symbols of the God of Wine. The satyr has a pointed beard, while Bacchus’s face is hairless. Both are naked half figures of men set in finely carved sheaths each decorated with a magnificent laurel leaf swag.
Some of the elements, like the grapes and laurel buds, have a bronze color patina.
The features of these Atlantes are expressive and the carving plays well with the contrasts of shadow and light.

These powerful sculptures correspond to the symbolic of Atlantes, male figures supporting heavy weights who are vigilant guardians of the home. In architecture, Atlantes are the male counterparts of Caryatides.
