This statue was built after Michelangelo (1475-1564), the famous artist of the Cinquecento. It was made in the 19th century in bronze with a beautiful green patina.

With a wave of his hand he moves his impressive beard, a symbol of wisdom. His elbow rests on the closed Tablets of Stone. The prophet is seated, dressed in antique fashion, with an ample drape and wearing high shoes with straps. His position is full of life and reflects the talented sculptor Michelangelo.

It is easy to recognize Moses, thanks to the Tablets of Stone on his right. But another clue helps us to identify him : his horns. Due to a bad translation of St Jerome's Vulgate, the sentence 'gold panaʋ karan' ( 'the skin of his face was radiant') in 'cornuta esset facies sua' ( 'his face was horned'). From the Latin version of the evangelist (390-405) to the eighteenth century, Moses is regularly represented with horns. This unfortunate translation, comes in handy when you try to identify the prophet.

This representation of Moses depict him with the Tablets of Stone and horns. The prophet is at a crucial time of his life : coming down from Mount Sinai, radiant and full of wisdom.
