Tahan: Marble marquetry casket

Dimensions
Width 7'' ⅞  20cm
Height 6'' ¼  16cm
Depth: 5'' ½  14cm

Origin:
Paris.Around 1860. Signed : Tahan, fournisseur de l'Empereur.

This gilded bronze casket covered in marble marquetry is signed « TAHAN FOURNISSEUR DE L’ EMPEREUR » (Tahan Supplier of the Emperor) on the lower rim of the cover, above the keyhole.

This is a particularly precious object in regards to the five “pietra dura” panels that adorn the sides and cover of the casket. The Italian term refers to an art developed by Florentine craftsmen at the end of the 16th century, which consisted of assembling fragments of hard stones, especially marbles, into colorful mosaics. Initially placed on wood panels for tabletops, these stone marquetry designs are here set into a gilded bronze structure. The richness of material of this type of object explains why aficionados, namely Louis XIV, loved to collect them. However, the charm of this piece resides very much in the freshness of the bright colors (turquoise, orange-yellow, lilac) that shine against the dark black Belgium marble background, and the delicacy of the bouquets. These oval marquetry panels are perfectly enhanced by the bronze frame in which they are set. The powerful lush floral decoration of the frame combines with the purity and delicacy of the stone design to create a stunning objet d’art.
