This enamel painting representing Daphnis and Chloe was executed by Jeanne Lemerle-Soyer in 1900.

Initiated very early into the technique of enamel, Jeanne Soyer (1879-1967), the only daughter of enamel artists Théophile and Lucie Soyer , worked in her parents’ workshop, where her talent placed her among the best workers, from the age of sixteen.

She exhibited in the “art enamels” category at the 1900 Universal Exposition and participated in numerous Salons.

Having ceased all activity in the workshop after her marriage in 1906, she continued to practice the art of enamel for her pleasure. Very cultured, she also engaged in drawing, oil painting, and embroidery.

Her style, characterized by great classicism and assured technique, is appreciated in both large mythological paintings, small religious subjects, and copies of works by her friend Gustave Alaux, a marine painter.
