André-Fernand THESMAR and Ferdinand BARBEDIENNNE, rare and large Japanese vase

Dimensions

Height 28''   71cm
diameter: 13''   33cm

Origin:
19th century, french

Status:
Good condition

This vase was made by Thesmar for the founder Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1873. The large dimensions (71cm high) of this vase as well as its ovoid shape developed by the Thesmar technique make its creation particularly complex.

Such technical prowess is indeed worth highlighting to the extent that firing a piece of this size in an oven is extremely difficult.

To date, we can affirm that it is a unique piece, which has no equivalent in Thesmar's production.

A true masterpiece of mastery and originality, it is an absolute reference in the field. This high-quality vase is also extremely rare for its time, particularly because it bears the full signature of the artist: “F. THESMAR” in full.

A dish made by Thesmar for Barbedienne and exhibited at the Salon of 1875 has a very similar decoration. It is kept in Sèvres, at the National Ceramic Museum.
