This very beautiful clock has been made from authentically Chinese bronze elements during the 1880s in France. The clock has a spherical bronze shape; a Chinese vase has probably been cut and reused in order to form the body of this clock. It is elaborately decorated with a dragon carved in relief, demonstrating exceptional chiselling work. The head of this dragon appears towards the top of this clock, carved in very high relief. The clock rests on a base decorated with a Foo Dog’s head, and a Chinese magot. The dial is decorated with real Chinese characters and is proof of the attention to detail taken by westerns producers.
This clock has been made using the technique that was popular towards the end of the 19th century, which derived from a profound taste in the Far East. This technique involved reusing authentically Chinese elements on objects manufactured in Europe, which would then be used to decorate the most sumptuous interiors.
