Gilded garden fountain with putti and swan (Ref.1651) Sold item
Dimensions:
Elegant Louis XV style fountain presenting a Breche violette basin upon which stands a gilded lead group sculpture from the 19th century. In a water land decor of rocks and reeds, two curly haired putti play with a swan. As they try to place a garland of flowers around its neck, the swan struggles tipping over a jug, from which the water of the fountain flows. The marble stand is adorned with scrolls on three sides that rise up from the base to support the basin.
The theme of putti playing with swans was very popular during the reign of Louis XIV. One of the most famous example of such work can be found in Versailles, in the Water Theatre Bosquet, imagined by the King in 1671 and created by the collective artistry of Le Nôtre, Lebrun and the sculptor J-B. Tuby.
