This exceptional Napoléon III period overmantel, adorned with a face of a woman and two cherubs accompanied by birds, was made in the second half of the 19th century.
The overmantel is embellished with a feminine mask situated between two cornucopias, standing out on a cartouche framed by carved openwork vegetal decoration. The uprights are adorned at their summits with two putti as atlantes, above which two birds frolic.
It boasts a rich decoration characteristic of the Second Empire. Evoking the ornamental vocabulary of the 17th and 18th centuries, its majestic design in the spirit of the Regency blends acanthus leaf scrolls, vegetal garlands, and an egg-and-dart frieze. This revival of styles from past centuries is characteristic of the Napoleon III period. On the lower rail, the precision of the goldwork matches the delicacy of the sculptures.
