Beautiful overmantel mirror of Louis XVI style from the 19th century with a grisaille on marouflage paper representing a putti scene dating from the 18th century. In a gilded frame with round flowers in the corners, the putti are busy harvesting wheat, reaping, threshing and gathering the grain, while two of them fight over a water bottle gourd. On the lower part of the overmantell, there is a mirror framed with a sequence of carved and gilded friezes of pearls, foliage and is crowned by a scroll that joins together the the upper and lower part of the overmantel.
Grisaille is a monochrome painting technique similar to the “chiaroscuro” or clear-dark technique, that uses all the different shades of a single color to imitate marble, stone or bronze.
