18th century
This extensive oak paneling in Louis XV style (1715-1774) was created in the early 18th century.
The panels feature a flexible ornamentation of palmettes and curved, but symmetrical, vegetal scrolls, foreshadowing the Rocaille art style; these incorporate shell motifs, a favored ornament of the time. The use of mirrors behind shelves and the depth of door frames visually enlarge the room.
The paneling includes an elegant Pompadour fireplace made of Rouge du Nord marble. Topped with a serpentine mantel, it is adorned at its center with a circular cartouche with scalloped edges, decorated with leaves hanging from acanthus leaves. Its curved jambs echo the paneling’s carvings.
