Made in the 19th century, this torchere comes from the famous Foundry Durenne - Val d'Osne and figures in its historical catalog.
On a large base, the Vestal holds with her serpentine body the torch which serves to maintain the sacred fire of the goddess Vesta. In ancient Rome, the Vestals enjoyed privileges, in exchange for their vow of chastity and their devotion to the goddess, which enabled Rome to be protected against the wrath of the gods.
The ludicrously bare leg of the girl recalls the imagination developed around the vestals. Pure young girls, with the right to pardon the condemned, the vestals breaking their vows have indeed fueled numerous scandals during Antiquity.
