Charming pair of sphinxes in terra cotta from the late 18th century lying on a rectangular base for a garden or an entrance. The young women features of the sphinxes faces are delicately sculpted. Their expression is lively and light. They both wear a tiara, a row of pearls over their bodice and a small mantle. Their bodies are lean powerful lionesses with noble postures done with much attention to texture and detail.
Originally Egyptian, the sphinx has always held a prominent decorative position in the Western world. In Greece the sphinx was half woman to her waist and a lioness, aligning charm with beauty and claws. In Egypt she symbolized the union of wisdom and strength.
