Origin:
19th century, Neuilly
Status:
Very good condition. The Atlante on the second console had a damaged nose, which will be invisibly restored.
Pair of carved stone consoles held up by putti Atlantes decorated with laurel leaf swags and acanthus leaf scrolls. The putti support the rounded shelf with powerful arms. This motif is part of the Versailles garden ornament patterns. Originally designed to be placed inside curved alcoves, the backs of the consoles are set into cement masonry to stand flat against the wall. This can easily be removed.
Similar to caryatids, telamons or "Atlantes", are male figures used as columns or pilasters. This architectural term is used in decoration. Atlantes symbolize vigilant guardians of the home.
