This Oval shaped Bronze bas-relief is part of the War memorial in the 10th arrondissement of the city of Ghent in Belgium. Commemorating the citizens who died in the Fist World War, this bas-relief was made by Achille Bentos de Maertelaere and was inaugurated rue Gebroeders de Smetstraat, on September 18th 1921. A soldier with a helmet, pants and boots rests on his right knee, holding a sword in his left hand. A woman supports his head. She wears a helmet adorned with the figure of a lying lion, a light flowing dress and holds a palm leaf in her right hand, symbol of the fatherland.

This bas-relief was cast in the Vindevogel foundry in Ghent.
