Dimensions
Width 35'' ⅜ 90cm
Height 44'' ½ 113cm
Origin:
19th century
Status:
Very good condition.
Carved stone planter on a pedestal decorated with putti from the late 19th century. The planter is decorated with grotesque figures and covered with moss. Two fauns, putti with goat feet, flank the carved leaf covered base of the vase. They express innocence and softness.
The putti were protected from rain and weather so do not have the same patina.
Like the satyr the faun is part human part animal and is linked to nature. Children fauns were a relatively rare subject before the 19th century.
