Great and rare real "Wallace Fountain" realized in the second half of the 20th century by GHM manufacturer whose mark is present on the base.
Green painted, the fountain was made out of cast iron. It is crowned with a dome and four sea monsters are placed on the ridge. The dome rests on four caryatids draped in antique (see our article caryatid ). They are based on a large octagonal plinth decorated with shells and bas-relief newts wrapping around the Poseidon's trident.
At the end of the 19th century, the arrival of Wallace fountains in the Parisian landscape is a real event. Initiative of the great art collector Richard Wallace, he offers 50 foutains to the city that will be placed at strategic points in the capital from 1872.
The Wallace fountain model is due to the sculptor Charles-Auguste Lebourg who imagine it after sketches made by Richard Wallace.
The realization of the fountains was then made by the largest art foundry in France : Val Osne Foundry in Haute-Marne. When the Val d'Osne is closed, GHM in Sommevoire continues making these historic fountains.
