This unique carved wooden fireplace was made at the House of Bamboo by Perret and Vibert. The Japanese decoration is very rare for this type of fireplace. A menacing dragon overlooks the beveled glass. On the shelf, a pagoda houses a clock. The mantel features inlay decorations. The entablature features a dragon carved in low-relief. This fireplace comes with a lacquered metal insert decorated with bamboo, cranes and herons.
The House of Bamboo by Perret and Vibert was founded in 1872 at number 33 rue du Quatre Septembre in Paris. Specializing in small furniture and bamboo and wicker seats, they quickly turned to the manufacture of wooden furniture carved in the Chinese and Japanese style. Around 1910, they opened a branch at 170 Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, where they remain until 1994, the year that they closed the House of Bamboo.
