Poor condition.

Rare antique wooden Empire style fireplace with gilt bronze ornaments from the first half of the 19th century.
Stained black wood gives relief to the bronze decorations. The center of the frieze is ornated with a frieze representing a triumph of Diana. The goddess, mounted on a chariot drawn by two deer, wears the crescent moon and bears the quiver and the bow that are her usual attributes. Surrounding her, nymphs blow in tubes and are accompanied by greyhounds. This iconography is inspired by the "Triumphs" by Petrarch, serie of allegorical poems written in the 14th century in Tuscan language.
On both side of the scene, two Apollo's chariots are placed in mirror. Apollo is shown here holding the laurel wreath by hand. We find this same iconography, treated another way, on the cover plate : Apollo wears the quiver in his back. Bow, quiver, lyre and laurel are the usual attributes of Apollo.
The jambs of this fireplace are decorated with rich capitals with scrolls and acanthus leaves whose upper corners are trimmed with high relief rams' heads. Below, snakes intertwine around a flamed torch.
The top of the fireplace is covered with green velvet and is decorated with openwork bronze belt.

The original insert is made out of gilded brass.
