This grand walnut wood mantel is hooded in the Renaissance style. This hood, crowned by a wide cornice supported by modillions, is adorned with a large carved panel representing a phoenix, its wings spread behind a lush swag of flowers and fruit. The quality of the sculpture speaks to the care given to the composition. The mantel proper is composed of Solomonic columns - twisted columns, which are said to have adorned the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem - a hearth opening presenting a succession of molded frames, and a front, delicately carved with curlicue foliage. Acanthus leaf cartouches mark the center and sides of the entablature, while the shelf projects out above the mantel.
