Origin:
Second half of the 19th century, from the Loire region in France.
Status:
The lintel and top decorations have been restored (invisible). The patina may be redone as well.
The entablature of the fireplace, supported by two columns with unusual capitals with fantastic figures of snakes with parrot heads. is elaborately decorated with swags, oak and olive branches emerging from behind a central cartouche with a coat of arms. The overmantle is a stone frame for a painting or a mirror. A medieval looking face emerges with flowing hair from a backdrop of scrolls and flowers.
Excellent quality of carving in a soft stone from the Loire valley, known as Tuffeau stone.
The decorations on this firepiece mantel are quite extravagant.
