Style Napoleon III / Ref.1487

Portor and Onyx antique mantel with Columns

Dimensions
Width 64'' ⅝  164cm
Height 70'' ⅞  180cm

Origin:
Belgium, 19th century

Status:
Excellent condition.

Rare by its use of two tones of marble (Portor and Onyx ), this Napoleon III style antique mantel is designed like an architectural frame. Two ringed columns, resting on highly molded bases support a large entablature, which is adorned with molded rectangular panels. The heads are adorned with diamond cut onyx squares. A series of modillions support the wide cornice. The delicate combination of color and the choice of design creates an exceptional mantel.

Portor is a relatively rare marble quarried in Italy and in Corsica. It is found in France, but very sparingly. A dark black color scattered with yellow grooves. Sometimes these grooves are grey, the marble is then know as Portagent. The most beautiful Portor is dark black with deep yellow veins, like golden flames. Its name most likely comes from the town of Porto Venere on the Genoese coast where Louis XIV exploited quarries for the decoration of Versailles Palace. Much used in the 17th, 18th and until the 20th century with the Art Deco style, for beautiful furniture, objets d’art and fireplace mantels The name “Belgium black marble” refers to several black marbles from Belgium quarries. Belgium black marbles contrary to French ones are free of veins and motifs. Their very fine crystallisation gives them a shine that is unparalleled. They were often used for mantels and clocks in the 19th century. In this category, the Mazy Black and Dinant Black marbles are the most famous. Without geological testing it is difficult to determine precisely which quarry Belgium black marbles come from. Dinant Black marble most often was used for the production of clocks.
This fireplace is sold without any insert nor marble floor but those can be made on order.
