Excellent condition.

This mantel of neoclassical inspiration uses the repertoire of Antique architecture: the two detached columns are Corinthian, they are fluted with rods rising half way up filled with chains of bellflowers around the entasis. The frieze of the slightly convex entablature shows a delicate wave of leaves and square rosettes at each end above the jambs. The side panels are concave, which is very rare, and create a movement with the convex curve of the shelf very similar to the rhythm of neoclassical architectural structures.
This mantel is a genuine piece of art, which is underlined by the use of high quality statuary marble from Carrara.

Mantels with columns have always been much sought after in France because of their rarity. From the middle of the 19th century, the center of Cousolre produced models similar to this one mainly for the Parisian market. However this production remained rather limited most likely because of the difficulty of sculpting columns.
