Brocatelle marble from Jura for a "Pompadour" Louis XV style fireplace mantel.
This marble has the reputation of being beautiful but fragile. There are columns in Saint Marc’s Basilica in Rome covered with a thin layer of Brocatelle. The oldest known carved Brocatelle was found in Pompey, where it was used for a three-legged table. It was commonly used in the great decors of the 18th and 19th century like the Petit Trianon in Versailles or the Paris Opera. The shades of Brocatelle marble used today are not as warm as the ones of old. The intricate marble floor of the Ministry of Economy in Bercy is testimony of this.
This fireplace is sold without any insert nor marble floor but they can be made to order.
