Louis XIV period cast iron fireback, dated 1685, presenting the coat of arms of France and the words: « pour les casernes de Longwy 1685 » (for the barracks of Logwy 1685). After signing the treaty of Nimègue, Louis XIV decided to build a stronghold in Longwy to keep the Spanish garrison of Luxembourg at bay and secure the passageway to the Ardennes between the Meuse and Moselle rivers. He had the old castle and Medieval town destroyed in order to edify a new city a bit to the North in 1679. Vauban built a fortress surrounded by battlements along a star shaped plan with six bastions. It included all commodities for times of war: a large church, an vast arsenal, eleven barracks and five wells.
