This magnificent Art Nouveau fireplace was realized around 1900. Its original form and its Renaissance style - inspired decoration make it a rare work.
Made of enamelled sandstone, its entablature in the shape of a pediment hosts a bas-relief after "Winter" by Bouchardon (1744), a bas-relief of the Fountain of the Four Seasons, rue de Grenelle, in Paris. This bas-relief made under Louis XV is famous, and a copy is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of New York. The scene represents putti and a dog in the forest sheltered under a tent and fanning the flames of a campfire.
The top of the jambs bears beautiful bas-relief sculptures of phoenix and lions' heads, while a garland of flowers falls to the footblocks. Finally, the tablet is raised, supported by modillions carved of beautiful shells, scrolls and leaves of acanthus.
This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor.
