Made by Gentil & Bourdet in the early 20th century, this mantel is decorated in blue stoneware. The decoration is a striking example of the Napoleon III style in its Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance inspirations. The two roaring lions' heads and the stylisation of other elements of the decor reveal a nascent Art Nouveau taste. The entablature features a large central clock with stylised plant motifs.
The model of this fireplace is reproduced in the Manuel d'Application des grès by Gentil & Bourdet, 1910, page 123.
