This beautiful pair of andirons inspired by the art of ancient China was made in the 19th century. On each one, a Foo dog rests on a openwork pedestal in gilt bronze , inspired by Chinese motifs, whose feet are formed of branches of cherry trees. A medallion engraved with a bird and reeds decorates the center of the base. The Foo dogs, or guardian lions, in bronze with brown patina, are exceptional examples of the vogue of Oriental art in the time of Japonism . These are representations from imperial China, protectors of temples and palaces, which are adapted to the traditional symbol of the andirons as guardians of the hearth.
