This Louis XV style cast iron fireback on which The Kidnapping of Europa is represented was made in the late 19th century.
The kidnapping of Europa takes its origin from the greek mythology : Europa, daughter of Agenor, Tyr’s king, is kidnaped by Zeus changed in white bull in order to approach her without being unmasked and not to stir up jealousy of his wife Hera. This fireback represents the overlap. Europa will have three sons fathered by Zeus : Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Sarpedon.
The scene features Louis XV style patterns : curves, foliages and acanthus leaves.
