This Louis XV style fireback with mythological subject was realized in the 19th century.
Goddess of the night and the hunt, Diana asked her father, Jupiter, for eternal virginity, and punishes those who try to seduce her or contemplate her body. Here one sees her quiver on the ground, and she appears crowned with her lunar crescent. A follower stands behind her, for Diana was always surrounded by nymphs, including Callisto, also her lover. A dog on the left emphasizes the loyalty and friendship that unites the two women.
The Bath of Diana is an important subject of painting, a moment forbidden to the gaze of mortals, like Actaeon, who for having surprised the goddess was turned into a stag.
