This Louis XVI cast iron fireback was made in the 19th century. It is adorned with a mythological decor of the abdunction Ganymede by Zeus.
Ganymede was the very handsome prince of Troy, son of Tros, King of Phrygia and the nymph Callirhoe. He was abducted by Jupiter's eagle to replace Hebe as gods's cupbearer. He became the favorite of Jupiter, who put in the Zodiac under the name Aquarius.
This fireback is listed on the book of Henri Carpentier "Les plaques de cheminées" at page 365.
