Very nice large antique Louis XV style fireback depicting a scene with the Three Parcae, mistresses deities of human destiny from birth to death.
A same model of fireback is illustrated in the book by Henri Charpentier "Les plaques de cheminée", with the following description:
"The Three Parcae spun the destinies of men. Clotha held the distaff, Lachesis turned the spinner, Atropos, with scissors, cut the thread of life. On the fireback, the sculptor, graciously grouping the three women, removed the fatal scissors ; however, three bats flying above the group, recall the mission of Atropos. "
