This antique Louis XVI style fireback was made during the 19th century and is signed with the foundry mark “PL”. It is adorned with the Pillars of Hercules in reference to one of the twelve Labours of Hercules during which he had to face the monster Géryon to bring back to Eurysthée his cattle. Thereafter, the Pillars of Hercules will be the name given to the Strait of Gibraltar, symbolizing the frontier between the known world and the unknown world. On each sides of the two pillars, laurel branches, symbols of victory, are affixed with finesse and a certain naturalism typical of the Louis XVI style .
