This fireback was made in the 20th century. It is decorated with the Salamander of Francis I, a well-known symbol of the sovereign, engraved in stone at the Chambord and Fontainebleau Châteaux. According to legend, the Salamander hibernates in the stumps and wakes up when they are set on fire, hence its presence on this fireback. The two upper corners of the fireback are decorated with two small flowers.
