This antique cast iron fireback was made during the 19th ncentury.
Square format, arched top, this fireback is decorated with a scene from mythology, framed in a medallion.
Thus Achilles on the right, seated, surrounded by his armor, hammer, sword and shield. On the left, a woman with two putti reaches out to Achilles.
Legendary hero of the Trojan War, Achilles is deemed invincible after his mother, Thetis, had plunged into the river Styx (a river in Hell). Unfortunately, holding him by his heel, it will remain the only part of the anatomy of Achilles which is vulnerable and will remain known as the "Achilles heel".
