This large 18th century fireback wears the Jansenist badge representing the three Theological Virtues. Faith is thus depicted as a blindfolded woman while Hope is represented by an anchor and Charity by a flaming heart. A Latin inscription runs along this medallion "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides" which means "Faith, relied on Hope, burning with the fire of Charity." This sentence appeared in the frontispiece of all Jansenists books. Finally, the medallion is surrounded on all sides by the Cardinal Virtues : Fortitude, Justice, Temperance and Prudence.

Jansenism was a religious movement that grows mainly in the 17th and 18/th century in France and is based solely on the doctrine of St. Augustin. The name of this movement comes from the Bishop of Ypres, Cornelius Jansen, who wrote the founding document of the it. In Paris, the mecca of Jansenism was the Abbey of Port-Royal. An other fireback with the same model is known in the Abbaye of Orval, south of Belgium.
