This beautiful antique fireback dates from the first half of the 19th century. It depicts the myth of Apollo and Marsyas.
Marsyas, a satyr of Phrygia, is reputed to have invented music and religious chants in honour of Cybele. He became an expert player of the aulos, an instrument invented par Athena. As such, he challenged Apollo, a master of the lyre. The contest, presided over by the Muses and King Midas, was won by Apollo, who punished Marsyas for his impudence by having him flayed and has body thrown into a cavern.
