This antique Napoleon III style firescreen was made in the 19th century. It is decorated in its center with the emblem of King Francis Ist, the Salamander, symbol of power over fire. According to a tradition since classical Antiquity, the salamander can live in the fire and extinguish it.
The firescreen is arranged on a bar with four feet adorned with shells. The firescreen's bronze decoration is characteristic of the Napoleon III style opulence. There are various finely chiselled motifs :egg-and-dart friezes, flower branches, lion heads and multiple acanthus leaves and rococo-inspired curves.
