Dimensions
Width 96'' ½ 245cm
Height 142'' ⅞ 363cm
Origin:
France, Circa 1930
This monumental Art Deco bas-relief was made out of composition stone around 1930. It consists of six elements forming a set of more than 3.50 meters in height.
In the lower part, a semi-reclining woman, naked, breastfeeds her newborn forming a Maternity.
In the upper part, an allegory of Agriculture pours the contents of a cornucopia into the cup supported by a man represented at his field work, with his shovel and his ox.
The representations are stylized, which is quite characteristic of the Art Deco style.
Two banners carved, but not bearing any inscription, leave to think of an unfinished state for this low relief.
Probably conceived as a decoration for a building facade and certainly inspired by the bas-reliefs of the Palace of the Golden Gate (Palais de la Porte Dorée, Paris) made by Alfred Auguste Janniot before 1931.
