This beautiful pair of antique vases was made out of cast iron in the 19th century after a model created for the Versailles Palace by Claude Ballin. The original vase, made out of bronze and exposed on the Parterre du Midi at the Versailles Palace , was a successful model, widely relayed by the many engravings that circulated.
This gadrooned vase is decorated with scenes from Ovid's "Metamorphoses": Apollo fighting the Python snake (here represented as a dragon, which also explains the presence of dragons to figure the handles of this vase).
