The bronze for this sculpture by Alexandre Falguière, depicting an Egyptian dancer, was cast by the Maison Marnyhac. This statue reflects the Egyptomania that swept through the 19th century. The dancer wears a headdress adorned with a vulture, mimicking representations of ancient Egyptian queens, as well as a large usekh collar, characteristic of Egyptian aristocracy. Her bare chest is emphasized by a draped fabric adorned with geometric friezes, close-fitted at the waist with a belt featuring a central winged scarab, an emblem of Egypt par excellence. She wears sandals tied with a ribbon across the top of her foot and two rings on one toe. Her pose, twisting and dynamic, evokes dance: one leg steps forward, setting the drapery in motion, while her bare arms seem to draw her to one side as she plays a cithara. Her head, turned to the left, completes the movement; however, the features of the dancer lean more towards Greek artistic standards than Oriental beauty. The dancer moves on a textured base resembling an oriental tiled floor. The artist’s signature appears on the terrace, alongside the founder’s, with the latter’s first Parisian address. The title of the work is displayed on a plaque affixed to the base of the statue.
