Wrought iron balcony railing from the early 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style.
In France wrought iron was used for balcony railings as early as 1727 and some were richly decorated. Right after the French revolution in 1793, grills, fences, balconies, railings were often taken down and melted for their iron. Wrought iron architectural elements became very popular after 1826 and the urban plans of Napoleon I and Napoleon III favored its development. Their decorations followed the fashions of the times – here the decoration is reminiscent of cathedrals, with vaults, crossing ribbed arches and Gothic crosses.
