Japanese-style table with partridge
Dimensions
Origin:
Circa 1880-1890
Made around 1880-1890, this coffee table is very elaborately decorated in a Far East style. Resting on four claw feet surrounding a latticed wooden support, this table is of a very rare quality. The top of the table has been out of a Japanese panel decorated with two partridges in engraved bone resting on floral branches from a tree. This panel, of Japanese origin, has been reused, taken from a preexisting Asian piece of furniture. The quality of the panel's decor makes the whole decorative quality of this table. The table's apron, decorated with a latticed wooden frieze, is also decorated with gilded bronze.
This table is completely characteristic of the Japanese style that was popular in France towards the end of the 19th century. This profound taste in exoticism was used in particular to decorate the eclectic interiors of well off collectors.
