Cheminée en marbre Noir Fin de Belgique

H : 115 cm. L : 150 cm. P : 40 cm.

Cette cheminée présente de puissantes lignes droites, bien découpées ; les volumes et les éléments décoratifs sont distingués les uns des autres par des moulurations marquées. L’ensemble s’inspire du style Renaissance, sans jamais toutefois tomber dans le pastiche. On réemploie l’idée des caissons, sur le bandeau et les têtes, encadrant un cartouche géométrique, auquel sont suspendues deux séries de trois gouttes. Le bandeau joue sur les différences d’épaisseur, les avancées et retraits, alors même que la tablette reste droite, tout comme le cadre du foyer, apportant équilibre et stabilité à l’ensemble. Les piédroits sont constitués de montants rectilignes sur lesquels est juxtaposé un pilastre en gaine. Chacun est décoré de panneaux sur son fût, et possède un chapiteau orné d’une frise d’oves.
Le marbre Noir Fin de Belgique présente un poli incomparable, apportant brillance et lumière à cette teinte. Le style apparente cette cheminée à un travail du nord de la France, peut-être du centre marbrier de Cousolre.

Fine Black Belgium marble mantel

This mantel presents strong well cut straight lines with moldings that create a clear distinction between the volumes and the decorative elements. The overall Renaissance inspiration - in no way a pastiche - is recognizable in the box motif on the side blocks and on the frieze that surround a geometrical cartouche with a double series of three drops. The entablature plays with layers of depth using projections and hollows, while the straight lines of the shelf and the frame around the hearth give a strong sense of stability and equilibrium to the composition. The jambs are composed of straight posts decorated with sheathed pilasters. Both are decorated with panels rising to capitals with an egg and dart frieze.
Black Belgium marble presents an unequalled polish giving shine and light to this hue. The style connects this mantel to the North of France, probably to the marble center of Cousolre.

Передние опоры сделаны из прямых поднимающихся линий, на них наложены сужающиеся книзу пилястры, каждый украшен декоративным орнаментом, капитель венчает рисунок, имеющий форму яйца.
Черный тонкий бельгийский мрамор представляет собой ни с чем не сравнимый блеск полированной поверхности, дающий свет и яркость этому цвету.

Cheminée de style Louis XIV avec acrotère à cannelures

Cette cheminée reprend la moulure cintrée des modèles Louis XIV ainsi que les écoinçons en relief sous la tablette. Elle est couronnée par un acrotère - surélévation en forme de socle - orné de cannelures sur toute sa longueur et de feuilles d’acanthe sur ses angles. L’acrotère est un élément décoratif dérivé de l’architecture antique qui couronnait les frontons des bâtiments. L’architecture et la décoration au XVIIe siècle se référaient énormément au vocabulaire antique pour créer de nouvelles formules ornementales. C’est en raison de sa forte identité classique que ce modèle a été repris dans tous les catalogues de marbriers du XIXe siècle. Le marbre utilisé est de la Griotte Rouge de Belgique.

Louis XIV style mantel with fluted acroteion

This fireplace mantel uses the molding and the two spandrels in relief under the entablature of the Louis XIV rounded mantel. It is crowned by an acroterion, shaped like a pedestal and decorated with fluting across the front and sides and acanthus leaves at both ends of the entablature. An acroterion was originally a decorative element that adorned the pediment of buildings in Antique architecture. Antique architectural vocabulary was a strong reference used by architects and decorators in the 18th century to create new ornamental shapes. Because of its strong classical influence, this model was found in all the 19th century marble mason catalogues. The marble used here is Red Griotte from Belgium.

Cheminée de style Louis XIII à boudins

Cette pièce est le modèle classique de la cheminée sous Louis XIII et Louis XIV. Sans cadre intérieur et de forme parfaitement rectangulaire, cette cheminée présente sur les jambages et le bandeau une importante mouluration continue, le boudin, qui donne son nom à ce modèle. La tablette, légèrement en avancée, et le pourtour du boudin sont agrémentés de moulures plus discrètes. Cette cheminée imposante aux lignes pures et sobres est réalisée en marbre Rouge du Languedoc, un des plus beaux marbres rouges français, fréquemment utilisé au XVIIe siècle dans les constructions et les décorations royales.

Louis XIII style Bolection mantel

This was the most classical model of mantel in the days of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. With no inner frame and a perfectly rectangular shape, this fireplace presents jambs and an entablature with a broad continuous Bolection molding. The slightly projecting shelf and the perimeter of the Bolection molding are adorned with more discreet moldings. The lines of this imposing mantel are pure and sober, and the marble used, Red from Languedoc, is one of the most beautiful French red marbles that was often reserved in the17th century for royal buildings and decorations.

Sous le Roi Soleil la cheminée garde une structure de forme rectangulaire, cependant la frise intérieure qui court le long des jambages et du bandeau s’arrondit pour donner un cintre de belle proportion. On retrouve donc la moulure centrale, ou boudin, de part et d’autre de moulurations secondaires. Le style Louis XIV se caractérise aussi par les deux écoinçons en relief placés aux extrémités du bandeau. Le Vert d’Estours, marbre ariégeois, de la catégorie des marbres fins, offre un subtil veinage vert sur fond ivoire.

Louis XIV rounded mantel in Vert d’Estours

In the reign of the Sun King, the structure of mantels remained rectangular however the inner frieze that runs along the entablature and the jambs could be curved in quite generous proportions. Here the central Bolection moulding follows the curve with secondary mouldings on each side. The two spandrels in relief in the upper corners of the entablature are also typical of the Louis XIV style. The Vert d’Estours (Green of Estours) marble from the Ariège region belongs to the category of fine marbles and offers subtle green veins on an ivory base.

Стиль Людовик XIV также характеризуется наличием двух угловых рельефных украшений, расположенных под каминной доской с левой и с правой стороны. Зеленый Эстур - мрамор, добываемый в Арьеже, относится к категории тонкого мрамора и представляет собой утонченную игру прожилок зеленого цвета на фоне слоновой кости.

Cheminée de style Louis XIV en Campan rubané

Il s’agit d’une variation originale du modèle Louis XIV à boudins. En lieu et place des écoinçons vus dans les modèles précédents, les angles supérieurs ont été sculptés en creux sur une partie de l’épaisseur, laissant apparaître ainsi deux niveaux de moulurations. La tablette produit un décrochement à cet endroit. Les côtés de cette cheminée sont panneautés. Cette cheminée est accompagnée d’un ébrasement en fonte typique des réalisations les plus imposantes du XIXe siècle. Il est décoré d’une rosette centrale sur un fond de croisillons fleuris. L’utilisation des coloris du marbre Campan rubané est remarquable dans cette composition. Exploité depuis l’Antiquité, ce marbre fut beaucoup utilisé à Versailles.

Louis XIV style mantel in Ribbon Campan marble

This is an unusual variation on the Louis XIV Bolection model. Instead of the spandrels seen in the previous models the upper corners are partly carved in a quarter circle motif revealing a second layer of mouldings; this creates a breakfront in the mantel shelf at this point. The sides are carved with panels. The cast iron insert decorated with a central rosette on a flowery lattice pattern backdrop is typical of the more imposing fireplaces of the 19th century. The use of the colours of the Ribbon Campan is remarkable in this composition. Quarried since Antiquity, this marble was much used in the Versailles palace.

По центру сделано украшение - розетка - на фоне крестообразного цветочного орнамента. В этой композиции хорошо показана световая игра мрамора «кампан рюбанэ». Этот мрамор, добыча которого началась еще в античный период, широко использовался при строительстве Версальского дворца.

Les marbriers du XIXe siècle ont toujours tendu à l’exhaustivité en matière de modèles, ils ont cherché à copier pour leur clientèle la totalité des prototypes des époques antérieures. Ainsi les catalogues de l’époque présentaient plusieurs variantes des cheminées Louis XIV. Notre exemple se base sur la cheminée à boudins. Elle est enrichie d’une volute de chaque côté du chambranle, enserrée dans des moulures géométriques. Sculptés en retrait, ces motifs créent l’impression d’un arrière-corps et de décrochements successifs. Le marbre utilisé est de la Brocatelle d’Espagne, dont l’aspect est plus dense que celle du Jura, tout en ayant les mêmes tons jaunes et violets.

Louis XIV style mantel with volutes

Marble masons of the 19th century striving for exhaustivity in matter of models, tried to offer their clients copies of the totality of the prototypes of the previous periods. Their catalogues therefore presented many variations on Louis XIV mantels. This example is based on the Bolection fireplace. A volute enclosed in geometrical mouldings on each side of the frame adds a classical sense of beauty. Carved as a backdrop these sculptures create an effect of successive layers of depth. The marble used is a Brocatelle from Spain, with a more dense aspect than the one from Jura but with the same warms hues of yellow and violet.

С каждой стороны камин украшен волютой, вставленной в лепной орнамент геометрической формы. Высеченные отдельно, эти мотивы создают впечатление объема на заднем плане и последовательных уступов.

Камин сделан из испанского мрамора Брокателле, который отличается от юрского Брокателле насыщенностью цвета, сохраняя желтые и фиолетовые оттенки.

Vers la fin du règne de Louis XIV, la ligne des cheminées gagne en souplesse et se charge davantage de motifs ornementaux. Le modèle à boudins est désormais une référence lointaine. En effet, les pieds et le bandeau sont désormais deux éléments visuellement bien distincts : la mouluration qui court le long du bandeau s’interrompt en haut des jambages et marque tel un chapiteau les pieds consoles. Les anciens écoinçons se sont transformés en motifs plus imposants : les cadres délimités par une double rangée de moulurations et non plus en relief comme auparavant. Les jambages sont ornés de cannelures rudentées dans la partie inférieure et surmontés d’un panneau galbé. Le marbre est une magnifique Brèche de Saint-Maximin, qualité très rare de marbre orangé, extrait dans le département du Var.

Louis XIV style mantel with consoles

At the end of the reign of Louis XIV the lines of mantels became softer and more ornamental motifs were applied. Here the Bolection model has become a far away reference. Indeed the entablature and jambs have become distinct elements: the molding running across the frieze stops above the jambs creating a sort of capital above the console jambs. The former spandrels have become larger motifs, frames, not in relief, but delimited by a double row of moldings. The jambs are adorned with filleted flutes then rise up to a curved panel. The marble is a magnificient breche from Saint-Maximin, a very rare quality of marble.

Углы над аркатурой очага трансформируются в более импозантные мотивы, горизонтальные части, больше не рельефные, выделяются двойным рядом лепнины. В нижней части опоры украшены зубчатыми каннелюрами, поверх которых идет выгнутое панно. Камин сделан из замечательного, очень редкого брекчиевидного мрамора Сант-Максимин.

Grande cheminée de style Louis XIV en marbre rouge

Annonçant par ses formes pleines et légèrement bombées le futur style Régence, cette cheminée est étonnante par ses dimensions imposantes. Les pieds consoles légèrement galbés soutiennent un bandeau très délicatement incurvé vers l’arrière et encadré de moulures très en relief. Les cadres sur le bandeau ainsi que les panneaux des jambages sont sculptés en creux, contrastant par là même avec le relief des moulurations. La cheminée est garnie d’un très bel intérieur en fonte d’origine. Ce marbre rouge est du Griotte de Belgique

Large red marble Louis XIV style mantel

The ample and rounded shapes of this surprisingly large mantel announce the future Régence style. The slightly curved console jambs support a very delicately cambered and deeply molded shelf. The frames on the frieze and jambs are carved into the surface creating a sharp contrast to the high relief of the moldings. The mantel is ornamented with a beautiful cast iron insert. This red marble is usually called “Vieux Rouge” (Old Red).

Предвещая своими полными и немного выпуклыми формами стиль Регентство, камин удивляет своими импозантными размерами. Ножки консоли немного выгнутой формы поддерживают деликатно изогнутый назад карниз, обрамленный очень рельефными украшениями. Обрамление на горизонтальной части, а также панели на вертикальных опорах сделаны впалыми, контрастируя тем самым с рельефной лепниной. Камин оснащен очень красивой чугунной вставкой. Мрамор, использованный для этого камина, называется бельгийский Гриотт.

Réalisée dans un très beau marbre blanc de Carrare, cette cheminée est un excellent exemple de l’appropriation des styles anciens par les marbriers du XIXe siècle. Elle s’inspire des formes en vogue sous la Régence : sa forme générale encore carrée avec une ouverture de foyer cintrée rappelle encore le style Louis XIV, mais les lignes ont tendance à s’arrondir et le motif central du bandeau rompt avec la sévérité des cheminées produites sous le Roi Soleil. Les riches motifs décoratifs montrent le passage d’un style à l’autre : déjà le motif des volutes latérales annonce les courbes sans fin du style Louis XV, alors que les palmettes charnues qui les couronnent et s’enroulent autour des crosses des volutes sont d’une densité plus spécifique au style Louis XIV. L’esprit du Second Empire domine néanmoins toutes ces allusions stylistiques et éclate dans le traitement naturaliste des motifs floraux du cartouche central, ainsi que dans la complexité même de ce motif : cuir, feuilles d’acanthe, volutes et guirlandes de fleurs.

Regence style richly carved breakfront fireplace mantel with a central cartouche bordered by acanthus leaves and lateral console shaped jambs

Carved in beautiful white marble, this fireplace is an extraordinary example of the talent of 19th century marble-masons to borrow from older styles. Inspired by the overall form of the Regence style the shape is still square with a rounded opening reminiscent of Louis XIV, but the lines are softer and the central motif is in great contrast to the austerity of the fireplaces produced during the reign of the Sun King. The evolution of styles is expressed in the wealth of decorative motifs: the side scrolls foretell the luscious curves of the Louis XV style, while the generous palm leaves covering them have the density of Louis XIV style sculpture. The Second Empire appears in the naturalistic treatment of the central cartouche floral carvings and in the very complexity of the motif: cartouche, acanthus leaves, scrolls and garlands of flowers.

Форма камина вдохновлена модой эпохи Регентства: квадратный контур и обрамление топки камина в форме арки напоминают стиль Людовика XIV, но уже видна тенденция к округлению линий, центральный мотив карниза отличает его от каминов эпохи короля Солнца. Богатые декоративные украшения показывают переход от одного стиля к другому: мотив боковых волют оповещает появление незавершенных изогнутых линий стиля Людовика XV, тогда как мясистые пальметты над ними, обвивающие завиток, больше похожи на стиль Людовика XIV. Цветочные натуралистические мотивы на центральной части, а также сама сложность этого мотива: завитки, акантовые листья, волюты и цветочные гирлянды указывают на присутствие стиля, характерного для Второй империи.

Cheminée de style Régence à motif asymétrique

Reprenant la forme des dernières cheminées de style Louis XIV, ce modèle possède un bandeau aux lignes contournées qui l’apparente davantage au style Régence. Le centre du bandeau est marqué par une feuille d’acanthe asymétrique, se superposant à un motif cerclé d’où partent d’autres végétaux. De part et d’autre, on trouve des panneaux moulurés en creux auxquels s’associe le motif des écoinçons sculptés en relief. La ligne de la tablette suit les courbures du bandeau. Les jambages restent sobres avec leur décor de double panneau. Cette pièce est réalisée en Arabescato, marbre blanc à veines grises.

Régence style mantel with asymmetrical motif

Borrowing from the design of late Louis XIV style mantels, the contoured lines on the entablature of this mantel connects it however much more to the Régence style. The frieze is distinctly marked by a central circular leaf motif with a dominant lush asymmetrical acanthus design, bordered by molded panels carved into the surface that follow the wave of the entablature and enclose bas relief spandrels. The line of the shelf equally hugs the wave of the frieze. A double panel décor gives sobriety to the jambs. Carved in a white marble with strongly contrasted veins.

Вертикальные опоры с их двойными накладными украшениями прямоугольной формы сохраняют строгий стиль. Эта модель сделана из мрамора Арабескато - белого мрамора с серыми венами.

Cheminée de style Régence à volutes, en marbre de Carrare

L’influence du style Régence est parfaitement visible dans la forme générale de cette cheminée : de section rectangulaire, elle se compose d’une tablette légèrement contournée, de jambages droits et d’une ouverture de foyer sensiblement convexe aux angles supérieurs. La fantaisie de l’époque se concentre dans la sculpture ornementale, annonçant les exubérances du style Louis XV. Le bandeau est agrémenté d’une complexe composition végétale : une palmette aux feuilles recourbées, superposée à des volutes, est le départ de deux guirlandes florales sculptées en haut et bas-relief. Les trois feuilles de la palmette centrale sont recreusées d’une cannelure rudentée. Deux profils de pieds consoles galbés sont sculptés en bas-relief sur les jambages. Ces panneaux s’achèvent dans une volute d’où émergent des feuillages. La précision et le foisonnement de la sculpture, ainsi que la force plastique des ornements sont particuliers à l’art de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Un ébrasement en fonte aux motifs de croisillons complète cette pièce.

Regence mantel with volutes, in Carrara marble

The general shape of this mantel is clearly influenced by the Régence style: a rectangular line, with a slightly serpentine shelf, straight jambs and delicately convex upper corners in the hearth opening. The fashion of the time focused on the sculptured ornaments, foretelling the exuberant Louis XV style. Indeed a complex decoration adorns the center of the frieze: from a curved palm frond resting on volutes emerge delicate garlands of flowers carved in high and low relief. The three leaves of the central frond are embellished with filleted fluting. Profiles of scrolled console jambs are carved in low relief into the jambs, which rise up to volutes garnished with leaves. The precision and extravagance of the sculpture, the artistic force of the ornaments are particular to the second half of the 19th century. A cast iron lattice decorated insert completes the piece.

В форме камина прекрасно видно влияние стиля Регенства: с прямоугольным разрезом, камин состоит из верхней доски слегка изогнутой формы, прямых вертикальных опор и части, заметно выпуклой по верхним углам, обрамляющей очаг. Затея, отражающая эпоху, сконцентрирована в орнаментальной скульптуре, которая предвещает изобилие стиля Людовика XV. На горизонтальной части комплексная скульптура из растительных мотивов: пальметта с изогнутыми листьями, наложенная на волюты, от которой отходят две цветочные гирлянды, горельеф и барельеф. Très équilibrée, cette cheminée présente tous les aspects du style Louis XV. Ses pieds consoles, ornés de discrètes volutes et d’un décor de panneau, sont surmontés par des têtes à enroulements. Une large baguette moulurée double les jambages et se poursuit sur la longueur du bandeau, soulignant ainsi les courbures. Le centre du bandeau est sculpté d’un motif de palmette, enserré entre deux volutes et auquel est suspendu une fleur en clochette. Cette cheminée permet d’admirer les effets chromatiques du marbre Levanto. A dominante rouge, ce marbre est fortement veiné de vert. Le résultat optique est des plus surprenants, donnant l’impression d’une surface moirée qui oscillerait entre ces deux teintes, tels les effets du cangianti en peinture.

Simple Louis XV mantel

This well balanced mantel is a perfect example of the Louis XV mantel. The jambs, discreetly decorated with light volutes and panels, rise up to scrolled consoles. A large molded baguette doubling up the jambs runs under the entablature, underlining the curves. The center of the frieze is enhanced by a palm frond bordered by volutes and a drop flower. The simplicity of the design magnifies the chromatic effects of the Levanto marble; the visual moiré of this marble is surprising as the colors seems to oscillate between the dominant red hue and the strong green veins, in a way that is reminiscent of the cangianti effect of Michelangelo.

Cette cheminée est un grand classique du style rocaille. La courbe et la contre-courbe y jouent un rôle primordial, mais la composition reste symétrique et nette. La forme est à pans coupés, avec des têtes garnies de coquilles et d’enroulements. Les jambages sont délicatement galbés et moulurés. Le bandeau incurvé, souligné par une baguette en relief se prolongeant jusqu’au sol, est orné en son centre d’une coquille renversée placée dans un jeu de volutes. Le motif de la coquille répété trois fois sur la longueur du bandeau a donné le surnom de ce modèle. Les artisans marbriers ont souvent joué sur cette forme, et on trouvera d’autres cheminées portant des variations beaucoup plus complexes de ce motif central. Le marbre de Carrare est délicatement veiné de gris, animant subtilement la surface.

White marble three shell mantel

This is a great classic of the Rocaille style. Here the curves and counter curves play a predominant role, but the composition remains symmetrical and clear. The jambs are canted, with scrolled capitals decorated with shells, delicately curved and moulded. The curved front is underlined by a baguette in relief running down to the floor and decorated with a central motif of a shell surrounded by volutes. This motif repeated three times along the entablature gives the mantel its name. Master marble masons often played with this shape giving many mantels much more elaborate variations of this central theme. Light grey veins delicately animate the surface of this Carrara marble.

A partir du Second Empire, l’imagination des artistes les a poussés à réinterpréter les styles antérieurs, le plus souvent en les rendant plus luxuriants. Ici, la forme et le vocabulaire ornemental correspondent aux prototypes du style Louis XV : le linteau aux lignes contournées, les pieds en console avec volutes, la palmette et les panneaux sculptés sur le bandeau. Pourtant, tout ici a été repensé, redéfini selon le goût et la mode de l’époque dans un esprit de richesse et de raffinement extrême. Les feuillages en volutes et les lignes en arabesques envahissent les surfaces, diverses textures ont été données au marbre : satiné sur les parties planes, il donne de la brillance ; hachuré sur le galbe des consoles, il fait ressortir les volutes en relief ; enfin, strié sur les ornements végétaux, il leur confère l’aspect délicat de l’albâtre ou du biscuit. Ce traitement sculptural de l’ornementation et la finesse de l’exécution sont rendus possible par l’emploi du Carrare, le plus somptueux des marbres statuaires.

Louis XV opulent style in Carrara marble

Beginning with the Second Empire, the artists’ imagination compelled them to reinterpret former styles, most often in a very luxurious way. Here the lines and ornamentation repertoire are typical of the Louis XV style: contoured frieze, scrolled console jambs, palm frond and carved panel on the entablature. However everything here has been redesigned according to the taste and fashion of the Second Empire in a spirit of opulence and extreme refinement. Indeed volutes of leaves and arabesques cover the surfaces; the marble is carved with different textures of finish: satin smooth on the flat surfaces for shine, a hatched effect on the curves of the console jambs to enhance the volume of the scrolls, streaks on the leaf ornaments to impart the delicate aspect of alabaster or biscuit. The sculptural treatment of the ornamentation and refinement of the craftsmanship is possible only because the marble used is Carrara, the most lavish of all statuary marbles.

La seconde moitié du XIXe siècle semble avoir eu une prédilection, dans le style Louis XV, pour le mélange du motif de la coquille et celui des végétaux opulents et charnus. La cheminée proposée ici en est un excellent exemple. Sobrement contournée, l’ouverture du foyer est surmontée d’un bandeau richement orné : une double coquille centrale, enchâssée dans les volutes de la moulure inférieure, est encadrée de rinceaux de feuilles d’acanthe très naturalistes. Les bords extérieurs du bandeau sont décorés de panneaux aux formes très découpées, ainsi que de délicates rosettes. Sommées d’enroulements, les têtes sont ornées d’une coquille renversée, à laquelle est suspendu un petit trophée floral. Des clochettes de fleurs en relief très doux, accompagnées de feuillages, marquent le haut des jambages galbés. Ceux-ci se terminent en cannelures semi-rudentées. Les jouées de la cheminée sont décorées de panneaux rectangulaires et circulaires.

Louis XV style mantel with shell and rosette in Carrara marble

The second half of the 19th century showed a fondness for mixing shell motifs with lush and generous foliage in Louis XV style mantels. The mantel presented here is an example of this trend. Above the hearth opening with its sober contour lies a richly decorated entablature: a double central shell, set in the volutes of the lower molding and surrounded by naturalistic acanthus leaf festoons. The outside border of the frieze is decorated with nicely carved panels and delicate rosettes. The heads of the scrolled consoles are embellished with upside down shells and small drop flower trophies, while the fluted and half-filleted curved jambs rise up to a framed decor of soft flowers and foliage. The sides are decorated with rectangular and circular panels.

Le XIXe siècle a su imiter les langages anciens et particulièrement le style Louis XV, mais il aussi su s’en inspirer afin de créer des modèles qui savent jouer des particularités des styles pour créer des originaux. Cette cheminée présente un profil de style Louis XV aux contours et aux arrondis souples. On remarquera la belle ligne accentuée au niveau des têtes. Sa décoration de bronze est tout à la fois légère, par les minces filets dorés qui délimitent les motifs de panneaux sur le bandeau et les jambages, et opulente dans le traitement des cinq ornements rocaille en bronze. Le bas des jambages est orné de feuillages enroulés à leur extrémité, tandis que les têtes sont décorées d’une coquille renversée d’où s’écoule un végétal sinueux et charnu. Le centre du bandeau est occupé par un bronze monumental en forme de coquillage asymétrique travaillé avec des effets de vagues et de courbes. Ces éléments se posent sur du Campan Vert, marbre royal, dont l’éclat froid contraste avec la chaleur du bronze. Cette pièce exceptionnelle est accompagnée d’un rétrécissement et d’un contre-cœur en fonte, richement ouvragés.

Green Campan and gilded bronze Louis XV mantel

The 19th century had a particular love for the Louis XV style and inspired by the original models found many ways to play with the repertoire of the style to invent new surprising creations. This mantel presents the profile of the Louis XV style, with a rounded soft contour. The bronze decoration is both light and opulent: light, through the delicate gilded inlays underlying the paneled motifs on the frieze and the jambs; opulent in the treatment of the five bronze rocaille ornaments. The jambs, adorned at the bottom with rolls and gilded bronze foliage, rise up to scrolled console tops from which hang bottom up shells and winding foliage. The center of the entablature is boldly decorated with an imposing bronze of a wavy asymmetrical shell. All these elements are set against a royal marble known as Green Campan; its cool splendor in sharp contrast to the warmth of the shiny bronze. This exceptional piece is garnished with a richly carved cast iron insert and hearth surround.

Une caractéristique du style Louis XVI est de faire appel aux sources de l’antiquité pour son vocabulaire architectural et ornemental. Loin des envolées lyriques du style Louis XV, il se base sur des lignes épurées et la mise en avant de quelques détails décoratifs. La cheminée présentée ici reprend le langage classique du pilastre cannelé. Les jambages, sensiblement fuselés vers le bas, comme des gaines, sont décorés de canaux réguliers et bien marqués, et de rudentures dans leur partie inférieure. Le bandeau et les têtes sont décorés de panneaux moulurés en creux. Toutes les lignes (tablette, cadre intérieur, baguette moulurée) sont droites, mais cette sévérité des formes est équilibrée par la grâce des proportions. Cette cheminée a été réalisée en marbre de Sarrancolin, provenant de la carrière de Ilhet, dans les Hautes-Pyrénées.

Louis XVI style mantel with pilasters

One of the characteristics of the Louis XVI style is its use of the architectural and ornamental repertoires of Antiquity. Far from the lyrical expression of the Louis XV style, the Louis XVI focused on pure lines and a few chosen decorative details. This mantel uses the very classical fluted pilaster motif. The slightly tapered jambs are decorated with regular and well marked flutes, with rods nestled within a third of the way up. All the lines - shelf, inner frame, molded baguette - are straight, but this severity is counterbalanced by the graceful proportions of the composition. Carved in Sarrancolin marble, from the quarries in Ilhet, in the High Pyrenees.

The curve is not inconsistent to the Louis XVI style. This mantel presents fine slender console jambs carved with curved volutes above and molded down to the block feet. They are combined with geometrical motifs: a fluted frieze along the entablature and quadrangular motifs on the end blocks. The shelf and inner frame are molded very simply. The visual impact of this mantel comes mainly from the quality of its marble: a beautiful Campan with ivory, pink and green hues.

Cette cheminée présente une forme architecturée à pans coupés et arrondis. Les jambages sont cannelés, à rudentures et asperges. Le bandeau est orné d’une rosette stylisée, nommée soleil, qu’entourent deux motifs de panneaux finement moulurés en creux. A chaque extrémité du bandeau, sur l’arrondi, les têtes sont décorées par une rosace carrée d’esprit néo-classique. Ce modèle, très prisé déjà à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, est un classique de la cheminée de style au siècle suivant. Une variante un peu plus élaborée remplace le soleil central par une rosace allongée. L’ensemble est réalisé en marbre de Carrare.

A mantel with canted and rounded architectural lines, with fluted jambs filleted with bellflowers. A stylized finely carved sun motif embellishes the frieze, the curved end blocks are adorned with square neo-classical rosettes. This model was very popular at the end of the 18th century and was a classic in the next century. In a slightly more elaborate variation of this composition, an oblong rosette replaces the central sun motif. The mantel is carved in Carrara marble.

La feuille de chêne retombant en chandelle sur chacun des deux pieds consoles a donné le nom à ce modèle de cheminée. Les deux pieds, légèrement en galbe, sont creusés de deux canaux très moulurés. Ils soutiennent un bandeau richement décoré de motifs en vogue sous le style Louis XVI : deux panneaux sculptés en creux de part et d’autre d’une rosace oblongue. Aux têtes, on retrouve le thème de la rosace naturaliste dans un écrin carré réalisée en fort relief. L’abondance décorative alliée à la pureté du marbre blanc de Carrare fait tout l’intérêt de ce modèle.

The name of this mantel comes from the oak leaves tumbling upon the top of the jambs. A pair of deeply molded flutes runs up the slightly scrolled jambs, supporting a richly decorated entablature presenting motifs that were very fashionable in the Louis XVI style: a central oblong rosette bordered by hollowed sculpted panels. The theme of the naturalist rosette confined to a square frame adorns the end blocks - here the sculpture is in particularly deep relief. The abundance of decoration and the pure white Carrara marble give its beauty to this composition.

Cependant, le léger galbe donné aux jambages rappelle le style Transition, situé entre le Louis XV et le Louis XVI. Les piédroits sont des pilastres cannelés et ornés de rudentures se prolongeant par des asperges de bronze. Ce matériau se retrouve sur le décor du bandeau : les têtes présentent des rosaces carrées, alors que le centre du bandeau comporte une rosace oblongue. Elle est encadrée de deux panneaux délimités par une frise de perles en bronze, motif délicat, tant au point de vue du style que de la réalisation. On retrouve ce motif des perles sur le rétrécissement - ou contre-cœur - en fonte.

The alliance of white marble and gilded bronze motifs is characteristic of the Louis XVI style just like the straight lines. However here, the slight scroll of the jambs is reminiscent of the Transition style, between Louis XV and Louis XVI. The jambs are light fluted pilasters filleted with gilded bronze chained husks. The entablature is equally embellished with gilded bronze rosettes and chains of beads: the end blocks are decorated with square rosettes, at the center of the frieze the oblong rosette is bordered with panels underlined by a refined line of beads - very delicate both stylistically and technically. This bead motif also adorns the cast iron insert.

Cette cheminée propose une tablette et un bandeau rectilignes ; ces lignes droites sont tempérées par les courbes subtiles des jambages en console, présentant une terminaison supérieure en volute. Le bandeau et les jambages sont agrémentés d’un long décor en panneau, en creux dans le marbre. On retrouve ici les frises de perles en bronze doré, placées tout du long, soulignant ainsi chaque panneau. Les têtes sont ornées de couronnes de fleurs, fermées par un nœud. Ce modèle a été réalisé en marbre de Carrare.

Louis XVI style mantel with bronzes

The subtle scrolls of the console jambs with volutes above temper the straight lines of the shelf and entablature of this mantel. Long paneled décors carved into the marble adorn the frieze and the jambs. Here again gilded bronze beads underline the contour of each panel. The end blocks are adorned with knotted flower crowns, a leitmotif of the Louis XV style interior decoration found on furniture and ornaments. They embellish some of the fireplace mantels in palaces of Bagatelle and Versailles. This mantel is carved in white Carrara marble.

Cheminée de style Louis XVI en Bleu Turquin avec décors de bronzes dorés

Cette cheminée reprend une forme spécifique au style Louis XVI : à pans arrondis, avec des rosettes carrées en bronze sur les têtes, elle présente une tablette et un bandeau rectilignes. Ses jambages sont cannelés et rudentés dans la partie inférieure, le haut des rudentures se transformant en asperges de bronze doré. Ce motif se trouve emplissant les canaux du bandeau : une fleur émerge de deux doubles feuilles superposées. Cette composition rappelle une pointe d’asperge stylisée, donnant son nom à l’ornement. Les motifs décoratifs ainsi que le marbre sont spécifiques au style Louis XVI. En effet, le Bleu Turquin, marbre italien, a été principalement utilisé durant toute la période néo-classique : Louis XVI, le Directoire et l’Empire. On trouve plusieurs variétés de Bleu Turquin. La cheminée présentée ci-dessus est une variante claire.

Louis XVI style mantel in Blue Turquin marble with gilded bronze décors

This mantel uses the specific lines of the Louis XVI style: canted jambs with square rosettes upon the end blocks, a straight shelf and entablature. The jambs are adorned with filleted flutes that rise up to become gilded bronze bellflowers. The same motif equally embellishes the fluting in the frieze: a flower emerging from a pair of leaves. This decoration is called “asperge” in French, meaning asparagus, because it resembles stylized tips of that refined vegetable. All the motifs and the choice of marble are typical of the Louis XVI style. The Blue Turquin Italian marble was particularly appreciated in the neoclassical - Louis XVI, Directoire and Empire - periods. There are many varieties of Blue Turquin; the one presented here is of a very light shade of grey-blue.

Действительно, голубой Тюркан, итальянский мрамор, в основном использовался в период нео-классицизма: Людовик XVI, Директория и Империя. Существует много вариантов этого мрамора. Камин, представленный здесь, создан из светлого варианта голубого Тюркан.

Cheminée de style Louis XVI à colonnes fuselées

Toute l’originalité de cette cheminée réside dans ses colonnes adossées et fuselées : cannelées avec asperges dans leur partie supérieure, elles se prolongent en s’affinant, devenant un motif de feuilles de laurier, puis une succession de bouquets stylisés. Les jambages sont surmontés de rosettes carrées. Le bandeau est orné de canaux rudentés ainsi que d’un feuillage disposé en rosette, enchâssé dans un cadre mouluré. Le plateau est très délicatement mouluré. Cette cheminée est réalisée dans un marbre demi statuaire de Carrare, d’un blanc pur et mat.

Louis XVI style mantel with tapered columns

The originality of this mantel resides in the tapered semi-detached columns: with flutes filled partially above with chains of husks, narrowing down to a motif of laurel leaves, followed by a succession of stylized bouquets. The jambs rise up to square rosettes, the frieze is equally adorned with filleted flutes and presents a floral central rosette, framed with moldings. The shelf is delicately molded. This mantel was carved in a pure matt white semi-statuary marble from Carrara.

По бокам горизонтальной части - розетки квадратной формы. Горизонтальная балка украшена вертикальными желобками с вкладышами, центральный мотив состоит из листвы, собранной в розетку, в рамке. Верхняя доска украшена легким лепным орнаметом. Камин сделан из полу-скульптурного каррарского матового мрамора чисто белого цвета.
