These exceptional terracotta statues, made to slightly overlook the spectator, are typical of the Napoleon III style . They evoke the festive spirit of the Second Empire, which saw the generalization of the Bacchantes and Bacchants representation, of which we see here a fine example.
In the procession of Dionysus, the god of mysteries and euphoria, the Bacchantes and Bacchants are young women and men giving in to the festive trance. Our Bacchante is dressed in a goatskin, and the Bacchant with a panther's skin, two animals that accompany Dionysus. The young woman holds a cup of wine, the ivy of the god twisted on her wrist.
The two bodies are slightly smaller than life and mounted on high pedestals, so that their heads look at the spectators by inviting them for example to the pleasure of a feast.
These two statues are clearly inspired by the famous sculpture of Jean-Baptise Carpeaux "The Danse" for the Opéra Garnier, which was realized in 1869.
